In fact, weight has become a bit of an obsession here, and the house weighs less than 5,000 pounds. This is really important if you are going to move this a lot. It is also hard to do if you are building for this kind of climate. VIPs are an insulating product that is not yet available in commercial construction but have incredible potential for tiny houses and the recreational vehicle industry. VIPs are thin (1/2” to 1”) yet have an R value of R30 per ½”. The extremely low pressure in the panels prevents heat transfer, and overlapping the panels means that a wall of R60 can be achieved with only 1” thick of material. The panels are filled with silica and are also lightweight. The space and weight savings mean that tiny house construction might just be the perfect application for VIPs. While I think that it's cool that people are making these types of things and I think that it would be fun to do myself, it's still just a home built trailer. I have to imagine that the manufacturers that build the ready to buy 5th wheels and trailers commercially all started out similarly.
